BSS, Dhaka :
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed Wednesday called for duty-free market facilities between Bangladesh and Uganda to expand trade between the two countries.
“Bangladesh is keen to increase trade with Uganda. Sincere cooperation of Uganda government is required in this regard,” he said when Ugandan High Commissioner Elizabeth Paula Napeyok called on him at the commerce ministry.
Based in New Delhi, Elizabeth Paula Napeyok serves concurrently as envoy to Bangladesh.
The minister said there are huge potentials to increase trade between Bangladesh and Uganda. There is the demand of Bangladesh’s ceramics, garments, pharmaceuticals, jute goods and plastic products in Uganda, he added.
If Uganda wants, there could be trade fairs and talks between businessmen of the two countries to expand bilateral trade, he said.
Bangladesh imported goods worth US$ 6.10 million from Uganda in the last fiscal year while exported products worth US$ 2.42 million to Uganda.
Senior officials of commerce ministry were present at the meeting.
Earlier, Iranian Ambassador Dr. Abbas Vaezi called on the commerce minister and exchanged views with him.
