Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed has dubbed Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) a ‘BNP affiliate’ for demanding snap polls.
Commerce Minister Ahmed on Tuesday reacted over the TIB’s Parliament Watch report published two days ago. It recommended another general election to make
Parliament more effective. “It was bad for Parliament, Tk 320 million has been spent; BNP has been mentioned this many times; the prime minister has been mentioned that many times…everything is all right. But what is the conclusion?” Ahmed asked while speaking to reporters. “They concluded that an election is the only solution,” he said.
“The TIB is not a political party. But when they demand an election, you’ll have to understand that the TIB is an affiliate of the BNP,” Ahmed said.
“Do your work as a research organisation. Who are you to demand elections?” he shot back at the Berlin-based antigraft watchdog’s Bangladesh chapter.
He added that the next general election would be held in 2019 in line with the Constitution. The Awami League leader also was cynical about the publication of the report when the law-enforcing agencies are investigating recent murders of foreigners and attack on a Shia gathering.
The government was not in a spot of bother over these incidents, he claimed.
“We are stronger mentally, because the criminals behind the murders of the foreigners have been found. The nation will know the truth now,” he said.
