Restrictions are there but ‘coaching business’ goes on unabated.
A group of unscrupulous teachers continue to defy the Education Ministry order on such malpractice, students and guardians of Ideal School and College in the city’s Motijheel area have alleged.
The number of teachers involved in minting money through coaching is 139, they said.
These teachers out of 50 at this institution made it mandatory for each student. Even some teachers force the students for attending coaching classes, some guardians said.
They also said the teachers prefer coaching to taking their usual classes at the school. Most of them also allegedly inspire the students saying that it is impossible to attain better result without going to coaching center.
A guardian seeking anonymity told The New Nation that his two sons are studying in the institution and he has to spend at least Tk 10,000 for coaching purpose.
“The teachers do not concentrate on classes. They compel the students to do coaching. At least Tk 1300 is fixed as fee for each subject,” he said.
A teacher of the institution seeking anonymity told this correspondent that the teachers have been doing coaching business and sometimes they form a syndicate comprising all subjects’ teachers with a view to avoiding hassles from the ministry.
Sources said that Motijheel Ideal School and College Guardians Forum sent a list of 139 teachers who are directly involved in coaching, to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for taking stern action against them.
The commission has already started its investigation into the allegation, an official of the anti-graft watchdog said.
A teacher who leads a syndicate admitted the matter and said, “Actually some teachers are teaching some students in their homes.”
When her attention was drawn to the alleged ‘coaching business’ by a group of teachers of her institution, Shahan Ara Begum, the principal, said, “I’m not aware of such coaching business here.”
Contacted, an Education Ministry official said the government goes tough on such coaching business. “We’ll not spare any teacher who is involved in such coaching,” he said.
The Ministry also detained some teachers in Chittagong on Monday. The teachers who were caught would be given exemplary punishment, another high official said, adding that they are working on preparing a ‘black list’ of the teachers who run coaching centers or involved with the coaching business.
