The Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) has been declared closed till December 13 amid tension gripping the campus over the abnormal death of a teacher of the university being abused and humiliated by a group of student activists. Students of the university were asked to vacate all residential halls at an emergency meeting of the varsity syndicate on Friday as tension was running high on the campus over the death of the young teacher of the electronics and electrical department.

We are appalled by the incident in which the students abused the teacher to death who was otherwise engaged to develop them into skilled manpower and civilised human beings. It is barbaric and quite unfortunate like the killing of BUET student Abrar by student activists a few years back.

The teacher was also the provost of the Lalan Shah Hall and it appears the student cadres led by their general secretary of KUET unit confined him to his office room on the campus and allegedly tortured him to accept their demands related to dining hall management. They also gave threats on his life while holding him hostage in his office room for about half
an hour before lifting the siege. He went to his residence, entered the washroom and fell unconscious. Doctor later declared him dead. We must say it is quite shocking that the teacher’s death was caused by party cadres. Such an incident has no parallel in the civilised world.

If the story is to be believed then the investigation by police should also honestly and truthfully expose the culprits. The management of dining hall should not be serious matter at all for taking a teacher’s life unless power politics and corruption had a away. For the kind of politics we have it is easy prosecute and punish the wrong persons. In our whole justice process fear is hidden but pervasive favour. It must overcome but it’s undeniable.

Our politics of grabbing power is an encouragement for thuggish behaviour. Who could be the students who dared to kill their teacher.

The combined effect of violence and corruption in our politics civility is fast disappearing. Respect for teacher depends on who belongs to government party who is not. Teachers have lost their inherent dignity by joining as party activists. The university teachers to be seen as party activists of corrupt politics make us most frustrated about the future of the country.

What we urgently need is change of politics that makes student kill teachers for greed.
