Gaza is braced for fresh protests against Israel as the first funerals are expected to be held for 65 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces on Monday, the deadliest day since the end of the 2014 Gaza conflict. May 15th is the 70th anniversary of what Palestinians call the Nakba, or Catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands were expelled or fled amidst violence in the wake of the creation of Israel in 1948.
Weeks of angry protests were further enflamed on Monday by the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem. While Ivanka Trump and other American dignitaries gathered in the afternoon sun to celebrate the embassy opening, the Gaza border was transformed into a scene of fire and chaos as tens of thousands of protesters faced Israeli snipers. Israel’s military said that it opened fire to stop Hamas from using the protests as a distraction to breakthrough the border fence and carry out attacks inside Israel.
Palestinians said the overwhelming majority of those killed were unarmed demonstrators while the Palestinian Authority accused Israel of carrying out “a terrible massacre” and called for international intervention to stop the killing. Despite the bloodshed, US President Donald Trump hailed the day as “a great day for Israel” and said he believed his decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would ultimately help forge peace between Israelis and Palestinians. In a speech in London the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticised the embassy opening. He said that the United States has chosen to be a part of the problem rather than the solution with its latest step and has lost its mediating role in the peace process.
The UK’s Minister for the Middle East, Alistair Burt, said: that the violence in Gaza and the West Bank has been shocking. The loss of life and the large number of injured Palestinians is tragic, and it is extremely worrying that the number of those killed continues to rise.
The reality remains that the will of one man, Israeli PM Netanyahu, is prevailing in the Middle East. Donald Trump’s abject submission to the Netanyahu doctrine–which is to do anything to enhance the interests of Israel, has emboldened Israel to such an extent that it can massacre innocent civilians with impunity.
Now all that is left is for the US to attack Iran. If that occurs we can only imagine the unrestrained glee which will surround Netanyahu and his closest advisors because it will be a dream come true for Netanyahu. It will mean that his twisted vision of an Israeli which stands supreme in the Middle East will come to pass. But for that to happen the US will have to directly engage with Russia. That is something which it does not want to face at the present–so sooner or later cooler heads must prevail. The US should remember the wise words of its founder George Washington who asked the new nation back in its early days to stay away from conflicts which would involve other states.
Please do give Israel the pleasure of killing unarmed Palestinian Muslims. What armed militias do in and around Palestine is creating a situation so that civilians are killed by Israeli army for fun. It is a disgrace that the Muslim countries of the region cannot together fight a war against Israeli oppression.
