Halda River is the only sweat water natural fish breeding abode of the country. The project works of Halda Protection Embankment aimed at resisting erosion of Halda river in Raozan and Hathazari section of the river.
Minister for Water Resources Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud MP formally inaugurated the project works of Halda Erosion Protection Project on Saturday laying foundation stone on both side of Halda river at Madunaghat point on Chittagong -Kaptai highway as chief guest . Both sides of Halda at Madunaghat point belong to Hathazari and Raozan upazila of North Chittagong. Chairman of the Parliamentary standing committee on Ministry of Railway ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury MP was present on the occasion as special guest.Among others, Joint general secretary of North district AL Yonus Gani Chowdhury, Upazila chairman of Raozan Ehsanul Haider Chowdhuy Babul , Engr -in-chief of Army Engineering core Maj.Gen.Md.Siddiqur Rahman , Chairman of Water Development Board AKM Momtazuddin, senior ofificials of Hathazari and Raozan upazila and chairmen of different unions of both upazilas, poura councilors and social elites were present on the occasion.
BWDB will implement the project duly supervised by the Bangladesh Army engineering core, sources said. The speakers in the work launching program said after completion of the embankment project at a cost of Tk.212.792 cr , the properties of Hathazari and Raozan upazila beside the Halda banks amounting to Tk.10000 crores will be saved . Sources said sensing the launching project work of halda river erosion , the dwellers beside river bank expressed heap of seigh .
12 kilometers long embankment Raozan and Hathazari section will be implemented in phases at a cost of Tk.212 80 crores for .A villager of halda bank Md. Yousuf Uddin told that their dwelling houses will be saved this next rainy season if the embankment work is completed before monsoon. The maximum land of Raozan upazila beside Halda river eroded gradually and the newly grown silted land joins with neighouring upazila of Hathazari. Urkirchar union is the most erosion affected union of Raozan upazila and a huge land on Halda river bank of Urkirchar gone under water and created silted land alongwith Burirchar union of Hathazari upazila. Chairman of Urkirchar union Abdul Jabbar Sohel told this correspondent that some hundred acres of land beside Halda river eroded in recent years following the incessant torrential rain and flash floods in Chittagong and its adjoining hill districts which created silted land beside the another village of Hathazari upazila. Following the entired efforts of local lawmaker ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury MP, the embankment project was approvedby the concerned authorities and hoped that the project work on Raozan portion of the river will be completed before monsoon next. Executive Engineer of WDB Swapan Barua told that the work of embankment in Kotowaligona, Sattarghat, West Gohira, Kagatia, Azimerghat, Aburkhil, Mokamipaa and Kachukain of Raozan section will be started very shortly . The total areas of embankment work viz. 4 kilometers in Raozan side and 8 kilometers in Hathazari side, sources said. Raozan portion of project includes from Kachukhain to Noazishpur union, sources said.
While contacted the lawmaker of Raozan constituency ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury told this correspondent that after assigning the responsibilities as Minister for Water Resources by Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud , I paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Dhaka with in seven days and apprised him the grievances of the dwellers of river bank areas of Raozan and the minister gave me patient hearing over the sorrows of halda areas . And he commits me to take a pragmatic steps for saving the people of river bank areas , he added. After long interval of waiting , the dreams of the people of Raozan is going to be fulfilled and the erosion protection work is practically visible.
The lawmaker further said construction of six bridges over Halda river from Kachukhain to Sattarghat point now under process . He also stressed the need of a bridge at Urkirchar point of Raozan linking Barighona of Hathazari for easy movement towards city. Mentionable that Bangladesh Army’s 34 Engineering Construction Brigade is going to implement a huge project to stop the erosion in Halda river in Hathazari and Rauzan at a cost of Tk 212.80 crore. The project includes building up roads and embankments on both sides of the river, repair of embankments and dams on 39 points across 12-kilometers belonging to Hathazari and Rauzan upazilas. Inhabitants of the area would be safeguarded from river erosion through the implementation of this project, local sources said.
This project is expected to be completed by December 2019. Water Development Board’s executive engineer Swapan Kumar Barua told the media that this project has been approved by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the betterment of the local people of Hathazari and Rauzan. Socio-economic progress of the local inhabitants would be expedited through the execution of this project, Swapan Kumar Barua added.
Moreover, resources equal to Tk 10,000 crores in those upazilas including crops, houses and farms would be protected from river erosion by means of this project’s successful completion, relevant sources stated.This project is expected to be completed by December 2019, sources said.
