The government has formed a Taka 823 crore fund with the financial assistance of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) to provide loan to small and marginal farmers at low interest.
The loan would be disbursed through micro-credit financing agencies (NGOs), said an official of Bank and Financial Institutions Division.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) has been entrusted as implementing agency.
Of the total fund of Taka 823 crore, JICA has given Taka 756 crore as loan assistance while BB would contribute the remaining Taka 67 crore from own sources.
The official said the scheme has been taken to boost productivity and diversity in agriculture sector.
The farmers who are normally deprived of institutional loan would get assistance on priority basis from the fund, he added.
He, however, said how many farmers would get loan is yet to be finalized.
