Tk 800-1000 bribe allegedly have to pay at the regional office of the Department of Immigration and Passports to get a passport.
The bribe money is usually collected by agents and distributed among the officers and employees according to their rank and file.
A part of the collected bribe money also goes to the head office.
An official of the passport office divulged this information in a written statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission. The ACC has also interrogated two more officials on corruption charges.
In his statement, the passport official said that most of the officials and employees have been involved in the bribery. However, if the regional office is free from corruption, the bribery will be reduced to a large extent.
There is immense suffering of the people to get a passport in a regular way. However, a passport can be easily found by paying bribe through an agent.
The report of an intelligence agency also matched with the ACC’s statement. But no one is reportedly willing to say anything during the investigation.
However, the ACC lawyer said the officials have to gather the admissible evidences in the court.
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said their research also had revealed corruption in the Department of Immigration and Passports.
The TIB also said that corruption is not coming under control as the perpetrators are not properly punished.
