DND's waterlogging: Tk 600cr project to solve problems: Minister

Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud yesterday said the government is set to undertake a project involving Taka 600 crore to solve the much talked about water-logging problem that makes life miserable in the Dhaka-Narayanganj-Demra (DND) dam areas.
“We have planned to undertake a project of Taka 600 crore to reform the DND dam aimed at solving water-logging problems in the embankment areas,” he said while replying to a query at a workshop on the feasibility study report on the GK (Ganges-Kobadak) project.
The workshop was held at the conference room of Bangladesh Water Development Board at Motijheel with its Director General (DG) Md Mahfuzur Rahman in the chair.
State Minister for Water Resources Nurul Islam, Bir Bikram, and its senior secretary Dr Zafor Ahmed were present on the occasion as special guests.
He also stressed the need for freeing the canals (31.162km) from illegal occupation to make the DND area free from water-logging.
“The GK project will bring 96,600 hectors of land under irrigation facilities and it will cost Taka 1,501 crore to compete the project,” the minister said, adding that the project will help to grow more food grains in less land which help to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He asked the authorities concerned to involve the commoners in the project to make it more viable for the people’s welfare.
Anisul asked the DG of the Water Development Board to introduce biometric system within three months.
