The Awami League government spent Taka 4,667 crore in the last seven years for distributing free textbooks among the students.
The government spent the money to provide 25,23,39,320 students of primary, secondary, ibtedayi, dakhil, vocational and SSC vocational levels with 190 crore textbooks in seven years.
National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) Chairman Prof Narayan Chanda Paul told BSS that the government is distributing free textbooks among the students so that studies of none are hampered because of their financial constraints.
This expenditure of the government is an investment for national uplift, he said and added that the people would surely enjoy the fruits of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s farsightedness in future.
The NCTB chairman said the government has allocated a budget of Taka 805 crore for free distribution of 33,45,18,635 textbooks among 3,91,94,903 students in the 2016 academic year.
In the current academic year of 2015, the government spent Taka 742.95 crore to distribute 32,02,36,844 textbooks among 4,17,92,435 students, he added.
Narayan Chanda Paul said the expenditure for the purpose was Taka 761.85 crore in 2014 while it was Taka 670.77 crore in 2013, Taka 628.92 crore in 2012, Taka 608.26 crore in 2011 and Taka 450.11 crore in 2010.
He said because of the government’s far-sighted decision of free textbook distribution, the dropout rate at primary level has come down below 1 percent.
