Members of Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested five people including a couple for making counterfeit currency from the capital’s Badda area.
According to police, they were arrested in a raid on a house of Noorer Chala Sayeed Nagar area along with worth Tk 43 lakh counterfeit money on Monday noon.
At that time, police also recovered different equipments used to make counterfeit money from the spot.
DB’s Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mashiur Rahman confirmed the news saying that a case would be filed against the detainees under the Special Powers Act. The detainees are identified as Abdur Rahim Sheikh of Pirojpur and his wife Fatema Begum, their associates Helal Khan, Anwar Hossain and Israfil Amin.
During the drive, a laptop, two color printers, a large quantity of glue and various materials including various types of paints were seized from them.
According to DB police, during the interrogation, the detainees admitted that it generally cost Taka 6,000 to Taka 8,000 to make a bundle of 100 paper notes of counterfeit money. Later it is sold for Taka 12 to 15 thousand.
The notes were being distributed in various places including the cattle market ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, DB police added.
Earlier, Fatema was arrested while making fake notes in Hatirjheel area of the capital two years ago. Her husband Rahim Sheikh fled at that time.
Rahim and Fatema and five others were earlier arrested in another case.
They have been dealing in counterfeit money and drugs for a long time, DB sources added.
In this issue, DMP Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) AKM Hafeez Akter told the media that various crime gangs including Malam Party, Aggoan Party and snatchers have been increased their violence during different festivals, especially the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
We, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, are working all the time to stop their activities.
Not only the countrymen are being deceived by counterfeit money but the state is also suffering huge losses, ADC Hafeez added.
