Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is going to implement a sewerage system after a long 55 years.
The sewerage project is expected to be approved in the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting likely to be held on October 8.
The project will be implemented at a cost of Tk 4000 crore.
Managing Director of CWASA Engr AKM Fazlullah on Saturday told journalists , “I hope the giant project will be approved in the ECNEC meeting. Earlier, the Development Project Proposal (DPP) has also been approved by the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD). Then it was sent to the Planning Ministry for approval.”
The Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) also approved the project in July. Then it was approved in the Pre-ECNEC meeting, the MD said.
Presently the project is waiting for approval in the ECNEC meeting.
CWASA is going to introduce sewerage after 55 years since the inception in 1963. The CWASA started its activities with the supply of 16 million litres of water through 19 deep tube wells, but without sewer system, but without sewer system.
Meanwhile, the CWASA conducted a feasibility study on “Sanitation and Drainage Master Plan.”
The DHI-Grontmij A/S of Denmark with Aqua Consultant of Bangladesh conducted the study during the last two years.
The report has already been submitted to the WASA management. The Chattogram WASA has approved the study report in its 42nd Board meeting held on April 28 last year.
The Master plan includes two parts, one is sanitation with sewer system will be implemented by the CWASA and the second part drainage system will be implemented by the CCC.
CWASA sources said, with the approval of the Ministry, the project is expected to be implemented by 2030 next. Chattogram WASA has already completed 55 years period. But since then it has been lacking the sewer system. It may be mentioned that the garbage of the city with the population of 60 lacs were flowed down to the river Karnaphuli through the different canals and drains of the city due to lack of sewer system. As a result, a huge quantity of sewer is directly dropped in the drains and canals of the city polluting the environment seriously.
More than 700 numbers of small and heavy industries have been developed on both sides of the river Karnaphuli. The pollutants and wastage of those industries are directly flowing down to the river polluting it heavily.
The environmentalists have recently depicted an alarming picture of the river. The Chittagong environment department has conducted several surveys in the river Karnaphuli.
The reasons for pollution of the river, the environmentalists attributed to the industrial pollutants, sewer, liquid and solid wastage of the residents.
The environmentalists opined that setting up of sewer system in the city is the only remedy of this horrible situation of the river Karnaphuli.
