DU Correspondent :
DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Acting Treasurer Professor Shahid Akhter Hossain presented the annual budget for the fiscal year 2014-15 in the Senate on Wednesday. The budget for Tk 373.88 crore showed a deficit amount of Tk 18.38 crore.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique with the senate members of all categories except students’ representative were present at that time.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) will fund Tk 323.50 crore while the university will provide Tk 32 crore from its own sources.
Pro-Vice-chancellor (administration) Prof Shahid Akhter Hossain, also acting treasurer, will place the budget at the annual Senate session likely to be held tomorrow for final approval.
The lion’s share of the budget, Tk 240.71(68.38%) crore, was expected to be spent on the salaries of teachers and officials while a total of Tk 32 crore and 90 lakh was allocated for the education. Tk three crore was allocated for the research sector only.
Some of the syndicate members said that the allocation in the research had narrowed down the scope for extensive research.
“DU budget is prepared depending on government’s allocation, and we cannot spend more as our own income is very limited,” said Senate member Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, also Dean of Social Sciences Faculty.
Professor Tajmary S A Islam told The New Nation that the allocation in research sector was poor. “We thought that the allocation in the research sector would get priority. But sadly that did not happen,” she said.
