The Government is implementing different projects involving Tk 300 crore for providing better health services in Sylhet region.
The major projects include setting up of a health technology institute, building some health complexes and a new hospital and renovating and strengthening the capacities of existing community clinics.
“The present government has implemented many projects in Sylhet region while many others are will be completed soon, brining in a significant changes to the health services in the country’s north-eastern division,” said Dr Himangsu Lal Roy, Civil Surgeon of Sylhet.
For example, he said, the first “Health Institute of Technology”, built recently in Sylhet for Taka 18.20 crore, will play a vital role to create skilled manpower in the region’s health sector.
According to the Sylhet Civic Surgeon office, the government built South Surma Upazila Health Complex involving Taka 11.75 core in 2013 and expanded Fenchuganj Upazila Health Complex from 31-bed to 50-bed for Taka 9.60crore.
The 31-bed Saha Paran (RA) Hospital in Khadimpara area of Sadar upazila was built in 2016 at a cost of Taka 16.1 crore to ensure health services to the common people, he said.
The people of north-east frontier areas of the district are now getting all types of health services after expanding health facilities at the Goainghat Upazila Health Complex, spending Tk 4.98 crore.
The Shaheed Shamsuddin Hospital was made as a 200-bed Children’s Hospital, which Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated on January 21, 2016. The hospital is now providing better and reliable health services to children.
Besides these projects, works of different other projects involving nearly Taka 50 crore are also going on in full swing.
Under these projects, necessary renovation was done at 185 community clinics while 75 new building were constructed for Taka 26 crore to take the basic health services to the people’s doorsteps.
Official sources said that the service takers from the community clinics surged from 1.96 lakh in 2009 to 25.44 lakh this year.
Seat capacity of Gopalganj, Jointapur, Biswanath and Jakiganj Upazila Health Complex has also been increased under a Taka 30 crore project.
The government also expanded MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital into 900-bed from 500-bed to provide services to more patients.
Deputy Director of the medical college Dr Debpada Roy told that around 5,000 patients come to the outdoor of the main hospital of the division.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina already announced that the medical college hospital would be made a medical university. Many patients expressed their satisfactions over the services they are getting at the hospital, which topped the public hospital in 2014 for providing better services.
