Kazi Zahidul Hasan :
The Chittagong Customs House (CCH) has showed a bright performance in revenue earning during the first ten months of the current fiscal year (2014-15) on the back of rising export-import activities in the country, an official said.
It earned Tk 21,864.71 crore revenue as Customs duty, Value Added Tax (VAT), surcharge and other duties during July-April period of the said fiscal against a target of Tk 19,975.66 crore.
“The Customs house earned Tk 1,889.05 crore more revenue than the target set for the first ten months of the fiscal despite the non-stop blockade and frequent shutdowns during January to March this year,” Azizur Rahman, Additional Commissioner of CCH told The New Nation on Monday.
He said there was a very little impact of blockade and hartal programmes on the export-import activities resulting in higher revenue collection by the CCH during the said period.
Azizur Rahman claimed that the importers and exporters did not face any problem in submitting their documents during the blockade and hartal due to improved service delivery by the customs house.
“We have already improved services of the customs house through introduction of the ASYCUDA World data software. Under this facility,
businessmen can submit their export-import related documents through online. On the other hand, a strict monitoring of harmonized system (HS) code while importing goods also helped enhance the revenue collection,” he added.
Azizur Rahman further said that the country’s political situation is showing signs of gradual improvement giving a fresh boost on import-export trade in the country.
“This will also help generating more revenues for the CCH,” he added.
The month-wise revenue collection data showed that the CCH earned Tk 1,915 crore revenue in July, Tk 2,277.21 crore in August, Tk 2,263.53 crore in September, Tk 1,942.09 crore in October, Tk 2,072.33 crore in November, Tk 2,039.29 crore in December, Tk 2,270.81 crore in January, Tk 2,146.56 crore in February, Tk 2,266 crore in March and Tk 2,401.89 crore in April.
The CCH had earned Tk 23,237.76 crore revenue in fiscal 2013-14 against the target of Tk 24,410.65 crore.
The shortfall of the revenue earnings was blamed for the uneven political situation of the country.
