‘ Tk 194 cr project taken to save Rangpur from floods’

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP, at Pirganj here on Monday said the government has taken a project at a cost of Taka 194 crore to save the flood-prone areas of Rangpur from floods.
“Implementation of the project will save standing crops, properties and the people of flood-prone Pirganj, Mithapukur, Pirgachha, Kawnia and Kawnia upazilas from floods of the Jamuneswari, Kartoa, Ghaghot and Teesta rivers in future,” she said.
The Speaker was addressing a function arranged for distribution of relief materials and agriculture inputs among the flood-hit people at Laldighee High School ground under Kabilpur union of Pirganj upazila as the chief guest.
Dr Shirin said the flood-affected farmers of Pirganj upazila would be provided with all necessary assistance to help them recoup crop losses they incurred during recent floods until their conditions would become normal.”Besides, the government will repair the damaged houses of the flood-hit people in Pirganj upazila very soon,” she added.
Later, the Speaker distributed relief materials among the flood-hit people and launched the post-flood agri-rehabilitation programme by distributing late variety Aman rice seedling to farmer Abdul Hakim of village Jamalpur on the occasion. Presided over by President of Kabilpur union Awami League (AL) Rafikul Islam Bakul, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Sirajul Haider, Rangpur Zila Parisahd Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom, Acting President of Pirganj upazila AL Advocate Azizur Rahman Ranga, its General Secretary and Pirganj municipality Mayor Tazimul Islam Shamim, Kabilpur union Chairman Rabiul Islam Rabi, among others, addressed the function.
Later, Dr Shirin addressed another function arranged for distribution of relief materials followed by a public rally at Chatra High School under Chatra union of the upazila with President of Chatra union AL Golam Hossain in the chair.
