Tk 1848 cr CWASA budget approved by ECNEC

National Economic Council okayed the total budget of the mega water project of Chittagong- Karnaphuli Water Supply Project(KWSP) amounting to Tk.1848 crores including revised budget.
 Prime Minister has approved the revised budget including additional budget for Tk. 885 crores on Tuesday at the ECNEC meeting , a CWASA sources said. Mentionable that the expenditures for the project was fixed Tk.963 cr in 2006 with Japanese financial assistance but this budget was expanded to Tk.1848 due to non-completion of project in due time by 2010.
With the procrastinations of launching the project work and different land complications with the land owners , feuds between the contractors, negligence of the WASA authority and lastly extortions by different quarters, the project work could not be completed in due time and hence Tk.885 cr increased over the original budget during last 9 years. The project work is expected to be completed by end of this year, s ources said.
While contacted Managing Director of CWASA Engr. AKM Fazlullah told The New Nation that the project work was expected to be completed by 2010 but due to several complications with the contractors and locals over land acquision and extortions by locals, the times of work completion extended by more 5 years and it is expected to be completed by end of this year. WASA sources said after completion of KWSP, average 14 crores liters of water will be produced in this project which will be transferred to city reservoirs situated at Battali hill and Baizid area through pipe line aimed at supplying to the consumers.
 The water of karnaphuli river will be collected from river for treatment at water treatment plant situation at Pomra in Rangunia upazila beside Karnaphuli river .
 WASA sources said to mitigate the water crisis in the city, CWASA formulated plan for a mega treatment plant in 2006 and hence deals were signed with China National Technical Import & export Corporation and Beijing Sound Environment Engineering company with the financial assistance of JAICA. Sources said a revised budget for Tk.1510 cr was formulated in 2010 for not completing the project in due time and next time limit was determined upto 2012.
 Finally it was extended upto December 2015 with additional budget of total Tk.1848 cr with increase of Tk.338 crores, sources said.
