Managing Director of Chittagong WASA Engr. AKM Fazlullah disclosed that Chittagong city is facing a serious crisis of potable water supply for the last couple of years and to solve this water crisis , JICA has come forward and formulated a project named Karnaphuli Water Supply Project (KWSP).
KWSP can be said the lifeline of Chittagong WASA . The total cost of the project is Tk.1510 cr of which JICA’s portion is Tk.991 cr. GOB portion is Tk.504 cr and CWASA provides the rest of Tk.15 cr.
Under this project, a surface waster treatment plant from the river Karnaphuli with a capacity of 143 Mld in Rangunia is being constructed. Transmission pipeline of length 30 kms., distribution pipeline of length 42.8 kms and two distribution reservoirs with capacity of 22600 mn and 8500 mn is also being constructed under this project.
The CWASA chief disclosed it while addressing the reception function as arranged in honour of Chief JICA representative in Bangladesh Mr. Mikaeio Hateda at a city post hotel on Wednesday evening.
He disclosed tht the project is now expected to be completed by the end of this year.In this project a new treatment plant adjacent to the old one with capacity of 143 mld about 500 km transmission and distribution pipeline will be constructed and all the old pipelines of Chittagong will be rehabilitated . He further said after successful completion of the project, the residents of Chittagong will enjoy world class water and there will be no need to by any water from other sources.
CWASA chief welcomed the JICA Chief representative in Bangladesh and expressed heartfelt thanks to him as Japan is the largest development partner of Bangaldesh.
JICA representative in Bangaldesh Mr. Hateada addressed the journalists, high officials of CWASA, JiCA and invited distinguished guests as chief guest of honour. In his brief deliberation said tht Japan has committed 11 billion US dollar loan for development since 1971. CWASA chief present flower bucket and crest to Chief guest . After end of the function, a power presentation on KWSP is screened.
