Tk 150m LAIP scheme to improve status of ultra-poor in Sylhet

A Tk 150 million Livelihood Assistance and Improvement Project (LAIP) has been launched in four selected upazilas under three districts of Sylhet Division.
A total of 3,700 ultra poor families of the selected areas would be brought under the coverage, the launching programme was held Tuesday. Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet Md Jamal Uddin Ahmed attended the programme as the chief guest at the Sylhet Zila Parishad auditorium. Anna Minj, director of Community Empowerment, Integrated Development targeting the Ultra Poor of BRAC presided over the event. Chevron’s representative Zulfikar Ahmed Chowdhury, Idea Executive Director Nazmul Haque and BRAC’s IDP Project Director Shyam Sundar Saha were present on the occasion, among others.
The project has been taken up with a view to improving the status of the 3,700 ultra poor families in selected villages through organising 112 village development organisations (VDO), Anna Minj said.
They would also be imparted with skill development training for improving livelihood through small business with micro-credit, improved farming of non-traditional crops like spice, vegetable, cereal etc. On the other hand, the 1500 small and medium beneficiary entrepreneurs would also be assisted through market linkage for their farm products, the organisers said. BRAC and Idea have already started working on the programme since January at villages while the 18-month pilot project is being supported by Chevron. Besides, the government departments like LGRD, DAE, Livestock and Cooperatives are also being involved with the coordination and implementation of the programme taken up in Sylhet Sadar, Srimangal and Komolganj in Moulvibazar and Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj district.
