Tk 12,392 cr for Home Ministry

Finance Minister A.M.A. Muhith’s 7th consecutive budget contains an allocation of Tk 12,392 for the Home
Ministry for the next fiscal year (2015-16), up nearly Tk 965 crore or 8.5 percent from the Tk 11,357 crore in the current fiscal (2013-14).
Of the total proposed allocation, Tk 11,203 crore has been earmarked for non-development sector and Tk 1189 crore for the development sector. The principle expenditure of the Home Ministry tends to relate to its control over the law-enforcement agencies of the country.
Proposing the allocation for the Home Ministry, Muhith in his budget speech said the government has already taken various
 steps, including creation of Industrial Police, Tourist Police, Security and Protection Battalion, and Police Bureau of Counter Terrorism to combat terrorism in order to ensure public safety and provide a conducive environment for economic activities.
In particular, 31,241 posts have been created to strengthen the Police Force and another 50,000 posts are set to be created, he said. “We have also created and upgraded a number of posts in the police department and extended data facilities to the BGB battalions stationed in inaccessible hilly areas.”
Construction of Central Jail at Keranigonj in Dhaka is underway. In addition, a full-fledged jail training academy will be set up in Rajshahi and a jail training institute in Dhaka to ensure necessary training for prison officials and employees including sentries, the Finance Minister said.
