The private universities are playing an important role in higher education sector in Bangladesh and this will also happen in higher level research in near future, observed UGC Chairman (State Minister) Prof Dr AK Azad Chowdhury.
Dr Azad made the observation on Thursday while speaking as the chief guest in the Declaration Ceremony of two Endowment Funds donated by Dr KM Maksudur Rahan Trust for research and improvement of English language skill among teachers and students of the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) – the first private university in the country in health sector at UGC Auditorium in the city.
UGC member Prof Dr Atful Hye Shibly was present as the special guest. The ceremony chaired by Prof AK Azad Khan, Chairman of the Board of Trustee and President of BADAS, was also addressed, among others, by the Secretary General of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (the Sponsor of BUHS) M Sayef Uddin and the Chair of the Trust donating the Fund, Dr KM Maksudur Rahman. Prof Liaquat Ali, Vice-Chancellor of BUHS delivered the welcome address.
The chief guest recalled the great contribution of Late National Prof Dr M Ibrahim and his successors in health care, human resource generation and in medical research.
He strongly hoped that BUHS will carry forward this rich tradition and will play a leading role in creating a knowledge-based society by establishing itself as a research-based university. Prof Atful Hye Shibly praised BUHS for giving high importance to research and expressed his deep appreciation to Dr KM Maksudur Rahman Trust for coming forward to support research especially in a private university.
Other speakers thanked the present leadership of UGC for their whole-hearted effort to improve the standard of education and research in private universities and they expressed gratitude to the present government for positive policies and steps in this regard.
At the end of the ceremony the Chairman of the Trust – Dr KM Maksudur Rahman-handed over a cheque of Tk one crore and fifty lakhs to the Chairman, Board of Trustee, BUHS.
