Tilted buildings along Gulzar Canal on Strand Road in the city are being demolished. The workers started demolishing the sloping part of the three-storey building from noon on Tuesday.
The CDA says the buildings were not built as planned. There is also no approval from the CDA. Meanwhile, the residents of the building blocked the road yesterday morning. At 11 o’clock in the morning, all the men and women of the tilted buildings, old and young, took position on Strand Road. The posters of the two elderly women in wheelchairs during the road blockade read, “Where is my last refuge?” “I want a way to live.” Residents of the building say the canal has no place in our house. We built houses in our own space outside the City Corporation’s guide wall.
Last Monday, two buildings and a temple built on the bank of Gulzar canal in Parbati Fakir Para area of Strand Road under Sadarghat police station collapsed. There is a three-storey and a two-storey building between the two buildings. One is owned by Santosh Das and the other by Swapan Kumar Das.
Locals allege that the CDA is piling for a retaining wall without adequate security in a canal next to the waterlogging project. The ground floor has been removed and the two buildings have tilted, eye witnesses said.
