Traders and employees of ceramics and sanitary products in the Banglamator area have staged a demonstration demanding an end to harassment and raids at business establishments by NBR officials for the execution of VAT Act 2016.
On Sunday, protesters closed their shops and observed the sit-in program.
Golam Rasool Belal, General Secretary of the Tiles Dealers and Importers Association, said that the rate should be fixed on the basis of package VAT, type of business and size of the shops.
He said that if their demands are implemented, the government’s revenue will be increased by Tk 500 crore. If 5 percent VAT is collected on the both production and import stage, there will be equality for all. Now someone is paying VAT, someone being forced to pay and even many are evading the VAT. He also said if their proposed demands are implemented properly, the violence and harassment by the dishonest NBR officials at the field level will be stopped.
With the economic development of the country, the use of various sanitary products including tiles and basins has increased in the construction sector.
Besides imports, these products are also being marketed by various big local factories. The tiles market is growing at a rate of eight to 10 percent per year in the country, according to the organization.
But in the Corona epidemic, the traders said that the sales have come down under the pressure of five percent VAT.
Earlier, the annual package VAT was maintained based on the size of the store. But now VAT officials are raiding the shops and taking away the documents.
At present, buyers do not come to this area for extra VAT.
Though my shop has to pay 5 percent VAT, all shopkeepers in the capital and many other areas of the country don’t pay this VAT.
Buyers are getting sanitary products at lower prices from others places. As a result, It has become impossible to survive now after covering all the expenses.
Another tiles trader in the Banglamator area said that the cost of transporting tiles on the ships from China has also increased due to the Corona epidemic.
Earlier, the rent for a 40-foot container used to be 1,000 to1,100 dollars, which is now around$ 3,500 to 4,000.
Besides, the purchase price has also gone up due to the rise in the value of Chinese currency. But in such recession, buyers are unable to raise prices, the traders said.
