Tight security on Tangail Highway to curb crime

Police Administration of Tangail has taken tight security since the incident of robbery and gang-rape of a female passenger in a bus in Tangail. For this reason, four permanent check posts have been set up on the Tangail section of the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway to ensure that the passengers can reach their destination with safety.
Apart from this, police patrolling has been strengthened round the clock every day in 16 points of Madhupur, Ghatail, Kalihati, Sakhipur, and Mirzapur Upazilas of the district. Police and local sources said that in the last 13 years, four-passenger buses have been robbed in a secluded area of the Madhupur forest on the Tangail-Mymensingh Highway. In these incidents, three women were raped and two women were killed. Apart from this, many minor incidents have occurred.
Source added that, on August 2, 10 robbers took 24 passengers hostage at gunpoint on a Dhaka-bound bus that had came from Kushtia. The robber snatched passengers’ mobile phones, gold ornaments, and cash. At the same time, they raped a female passenger. In this incident, the members of the law and order forces arrested 11 members of the bandit gang.
Meanwhile, to stop the repetition of such incidents in the future police have started search operations and making video records of various vehicles including passenger buses, cars, and trucks loaded with cattle establishing check posts on different parts of the highway and regional roads of Tangail district.
Md. Sharfuddin, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) of Tangail said that several check posts have been set up in different parts of the road so that passengers can travel smoothly. Besides, regular police patrol has been strengthened to ensure the safety of the passengers.
Solaiman Hasan, Mymensingh bound passenger said that he has to traveled to Tangail at least two days a week for business purposes. At present, police patrols and check posts have been set up at various places on the road, so we can now travel more safely than before.
Sarkar Mohammad Qaiser, Superintendent of Police Tangail said that the bus of a certain route is being searched only if it enters another route. Besides, all the passengers and drivers of that bus are being videotaped. At the same time, bus drivers have been made aware so that they never picked up any passengers from roads except at designated places.
