An all-round performance by Shakib Al Hasan powered Bangladesh to crush Afghanistan by 62 runs in their match of the ICC World Cup Cricket at Southampton in England on Monday.
Shakib Al Hasan notched up a half-century and finished his bowling spell as 10-1-29-5.
Sent into bat first, Bangladesh piled up a fighting total of 262 for the loss of seven wickets and then bundled out Afghanistan for 200 off 47 overs.
Mr Dependable Mushfiqur Rahim and ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan played the vital role to register a fighting total for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh had a sorrow start as opener Liton Das (16) was caught at the short cover by Hashmatullah Shahidi off Mujeeb Ur Rahman when Bangladesh’s score was just 16.
After Liton’s departure, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan built a remarkable partnership. They put on together 49 runs in the second wicket stand before Tamim was bowled out by Mohammad Nabi when Bangladesh’s total was 82 for the loss of two wickets.
Tamim made 36 from 53 balls featuring four fours.
After Tamim’s dismissal, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim contributed together 61 runs for the third wicket partnership before Shakib was trapped leg before wicket by Mujeeb Ur Rahman when Bangladesh’s score was 143 for the loss of three wickets.
Shakib Al Hasan hit a fine 51. His 69-ball innings saw just one four. It was Shakib’s 45th ODI half century.
Third-down Soumya Sarkar (3) was trapped leg before wicket by Mujeeb Ur Rahman when Bangladesh’s total was 151 for the loss of four wickets.
Second-down Mushfiqur Rahim and fourth-down Mahmudullah Riyad mended the damage adding together 56 runs in the fifth wicket stand before Riyad (27) was caught at the short mid-wicket by Mahammad Nabi off Gulbadin Naib when Bangladesh’s score was 207 for the loss of five wickets.
After Riyad’s dismissal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mosaddek Hossanin made another remarkable partnership. They put on together 44 runs for the sixth wicket partnership before Mushfiqur was caught at the extra cover by Mohammad Nabi off Dawlat Zadran when the team’s total was 251 for the loss of six wickets.
Mushfiqur Rahim notched up a sparkle 83. His 87-ball knock was laced with four fours and a sixer. Mushfiqur reached his 35th fifty-run landmark using 56 balls with two fours and a six.
Fifth-down Mosaddek Hossain hit a fine 35 from 24 balls featuring four fours before he was cleanly bowled out by Gulbadin Naib when Bangladesh’s innings came to an end.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman captured three wickets at the cost of 39 runs, while Gulbadin Naib bagged a couple of wickets instead of 56 runs.
Mohammad Nabi and Dawlat Zadran got one wicket each conceding 44 and 64 runs respectively.
Later, Afghanistan made a good start as openers Gulbadin Naib and Rahmat Shah put on together 49 runs in the opening stand before Rahmat Shah (24) was caught at the mid-on by Tamim Iqbal off Shakib Al Hasan.
Gulbadin Naib and Hashmatullah Shahidi added 30 runs in the second wicket stand before Shahidi (11) was stumped out Mushfiqur Rahim off Mosaddek Hossain when Afghanistan’s total was 79 for the loss of two wickets.
Opener Gulbadin Naib was caught at the short extra cover by Liton Das off Shakib Al Hasan when Afghanistan’s score was 104 for the loss of three wickets.
Naib hit a captain’s knock of 47. His 75-ball innings saw three fours.
Then Shakib struck again as Mohammad Nabi was cleanly bowled out by the left-arm spinner for a duck when Afghanistan’s score was 104 for the loss of four wickets.
Second-down Asghar Afghan (20) was caught at the deep mid-wicket by substitute Sabbir Rahman off Shakib Al Hasan when Afghanistan’s total was 117 for the loss of five wickets.
Fifth-down Ikram Alikhil ( 11) was run out by a direct throw of Liton Das when Afghanistan’s score was 132 for the loss of six wickets.
Sixth-down Najibullah Jadran (23) was stumped out by Mushfiqur Rahim off Shakib Al Hasan when Afghanistan’s total was 188 for the loss of seven wickets.
Then Mustafizur Rahman dismissed Rashid Khan (2) when Afghanistan’s score was 191 for the loss of eight wickets.
Dawlat Zadran (0) was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman when Afghanistan’s total was 195 for the loss of nine wickets.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman (0) was dismissed by Mohammad Saifuddin and Afghanistan’s innings was concluded.
