Despite Mahmudullah Riyad’s consecutive second ton Bangladesh lost to New Zealand by three wickets in their last Pool A match of the ICC World Cup Cricket at the Seddon Park in Hamilton, New Zealand on Friday. New Zealand and Bangladesh have already confirmed their quarter-finals berth.
Mahmudullah remained unbeaten with 128. His 123-ball innings was studded with 12 fours and three sixes. It was Mahmudullah Riyad’s back-to-back
century in his career and also in World Cup Cricket for Bangladesh.
Earlier, Riyad hit 103 against England on March 9.
Sent into bat first, Bangladesh scored a challenging total of 288 for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 50 overs.
In reply, New Zealand reached the winning spot making 290 for the loss of seven wickets when they had just seven more balls to play.
Earlier, Bangladesh made a disastrous start as they lost quick two wickets for 27 runs.
Openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes again failed to make notable score. Tamim was dismissed for 13 while Imrul Kayes was removed for two.
Mahmudullah Riyad and Soumya Sarkar salvaged their team from early debacle adding together 90 runs for the third wicket partnership before Soumya Sarkar was caught at the long-on by Corey Anderson off Daniel Vettori when Bangladesh’s score was 117 for the loss of three wickets.
Soumya Sarkar notched up 51 from 58 balls including seven fours.
It was Sarkar’s maiden ODI half century.
Later, Mahmudullah Riyad and Sabbir Rahman built another notable partnership. They put on together 82 runs before Sabbir Rahman was caught at the long-off by Brendon McCullum off Grant Elliott when the team’s total was 260 for the loss of seven wickets.
Sabbir hit a quick-fire 40 off 23 balls featuring five fours and two sixes.
Grant Elliott, Corey Anderson, Trent Boult got two wickets each conceding 27, 43 and 56 runs respectively.
New Zealand made a shaky start as the hosts lost their early two wickets for 33 runs.
Then Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor repaired the damage adding together 131 runs for the third wicket partnership before Martin Guptill was caught at the long-on by Rubel Hossain off Shakib Al Hasan when the Kiwis total was 164 for the loss of three wickets.
Opener Martin Guptill led his team from the frontline making a spectacular 105 from 100 balls with 11 fours and two sixes. Guptill was adjudged the Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.
Shakib Al Hasan gave his team early breakthrough when he dismissed in-form Brendon McCullum for eight and then Shakib removed Kane Williamson for just one.
Ross Taylor knocked a calm 56 from 97 balls with five fours before he was trapped leg before wicket by Nasir Hossain when New Zealand’s total was 219 for the loss of five wickets. Ross Taylor hit his 30th ODI half century and crossed the 5000-run landmark in ODI cricket.
Corey Anderson and Grant Elliott added 39 each to the New Zealand total.
Tail-enders Daniel Vettori and Tim Southee remained unbeaten with 16 and 12 and played an important role to earn the Kiwis hard-fought victory.
Shakib Al Hasan grabbed four wickets at the cost of 55 runs while Nasir Hossain bagged a pair of wickets instead of 32 runs.
Besides, Rubel Hossain took one wicket for 40 runs.
