The 2nd Global Tiger Stocktaking Conference-2014 aiming to save the tiger population of the world begins in the city on Sunday.
Bangladesh Forest Department under the Ministry of Environment and Forests organised the conference in cooperation with Global Tiger Initiative, Global Tiger Forum and different development partners including the World Bank.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the three-day conference at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel.
Environment and Forests Secretary Najibur Rahman briefed the reporters about the conference at the National Press Club on Saturday.
Around 140 representatives from 20 countries, including the 13 Tiger Range Countries (TRC), and different donor agencies will participate in the conference.
The objective of the conference is to take stock of progress made in implementation of the Global Tiger Recovery Program (GTRP) by the 13 Tiger Range Countries (TRCs) and their partners as directed by the Thimphu Affirmative Nine-Point Action Agenda on Tiger Conservation and the GTRP Implementation Plan 2013-14, including reviewing current status of the GTRP Implementation Plan 2013-14; discussing findings of the first reporting of the GTRP’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs); and reviewing the status of frontline capacity, resources, and gaps; recognising good practices to develop the way forward on all dimensions of the Thimphu Agenda.
Dr John Seidensticker, head of Conservation Ecology Centre at Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, USA; Andrey V Kushlin, programme manger of World Bank’s Global Tiger Initiative; and Younus Ali, Chief Forest Conservator also spoke at the press briefing.
