National Desk :
Tidal surge, caused by super cyclone ‘Yaas’, has inundated coastal villages and damaged a number of dams in Khulna and Satkhira districts today.
According to district administrations, several dams, situated at Shyamnagar as well as Ashashuni upazilas in Satkhira district and Dakop as well as Koyra upazilas in Khulna, have been damaged due to tidal surge caused by the super cyclone Yaas that already created havoc in different regions of India, including West Bengal, this morning.
A total of 20 villages under Dakop and Koyra upazilas have been inundated with the damage of a number of embankments, leaving hundreds of families in peril.
Meanwhile, Khulna coastal belt and adjacent districts of Sundarbans have been experiencing drizzling with squally winds under the influence of ‘Yaas’ for the last 24 hours.
“At least 50 points of several dams in the two districts have been damaged due to tidal surge,” said Md Rashed, executive engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) division-1.
Local people along with employees of Water Development Board are repairing the embankments, he added.
Meanwhile, the operational activities of Mongla port resumed this afternoon, said Md Makruzzaman, public relation officer of Mongla Port Authority.
Earlier, Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat district administrations, Mongla Port Authority, Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard of Mongla West Zone took massive preparation in the coastal belt as the met office issued cautionary signal number 3, saying a cyclone codenamed “Yaas” might cross the coastal belt of Bangladesh by Wednesday.
