Chattogram Bureau :
The gate (sluice gate) of tidal regulator imported from the Netherlands has reached Chittagong with the aim of placing it at the mouth of five canals of the city under the ongoing mega project to alleviate waterlogging.
The gates are to be taken to the respective canals this week for the purpose of setting up after unloading from Chittagong port. In addition, 11 pumps were shipped to England on January 30 to be installed in the canals.
The pumps are expected to reach Chittagong in the first week of next month.
Project stakeholders say that once the installation of regulators with pumps is completed, the city dwellers will be protected from waterlogging caused by tidal and rain water. This is because tidal water can be prevented from entering the city by keeping the gate of the regulator closed. Rain water will be irrigated with pump again.
According to the development proposal (DPP) of the mega project, although there are 36 canals under the project, regulators with pumps will be installed in five canals. The canals are Maheshkhal, Tekpara Khal, Kalabagicha Khal, Firingibazar Khal and Maryam Bibi Khal.
