Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has submitted its report on corruption in private universities to the education ministry. The report was found in the Secretariat’s mailbox on Monday and sent to the minister, ministry spokesperson Subodh Chandra Dhali said.Relevant departments were given copies of it, he said.Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has directed the departments concerned to do whatever necessary after assessing the report. On June 30, TIB released a research report titled ‘Private Universities: Challenges of Good Governance and Ways Forward’.The report said millions of Taka change hands in private universities for unethical considerations. It said, almost anything is possible with under-the-table payments in these universities-from getting pass marks by paying up Tk 500 to securing false certificates and assignments to audit to manipulate campus inspection, approval of appointments to top posts, approval of new departments and syllabus.Higher the stakes and more difficult the faking, one has to pay up more – up to Tk 30 million for a real big fix.The education ministry and the University Grants Commission already protested against the report findings.Nahid asked the TIB to furnish evidence backing their findings.
