Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) called for a conducive environment to ensure women empowerment, leadership and gender equality in all areas.
TIB made this call in a statement on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Monday.
This year, TIB is celebrating the day through various programmes at the local and national levels under the theme “Sustainable Development and Good Governance: Women in Leadership and Equality”.
Meanwhile, a two-day training workshop on the same theme was organised at the national level with the participation of women Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) of 24 upazilas of the country in collaboration with the Cabinet Division.
In the statement, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of TIB, said various studies have also shown that women empowerment is being hampered due to corruption.
In countries where gender equality and women empowerment are successful, those countries have succeeded in establishing good governance by preventing corruption, he insists.
Terming about half of the total population of the country as women, Dr Iftekharuzzaman said sustainable development is not possible without the active participation of women.
It is also impossible to ensure gender equality and good governance without the effective participation of women in leadership, he points out.
Gender inequality and corruption are interrelated. Gender inequality hinders good governance, sustainable development and poverty alleviation, Dr Zaman insisted.
