Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has hailed the government as it decided to observe December 9 as the Anti-Corruption Day every year.
On Monday, the cabinet in its weekly meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair decided to observe the Anti-Corruption Day on December 9.
In a statement on Tuesday, TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said the decision to observe the Anti-Corruption Day is consistent to the policies and strategies of the government taken to establish good governance in the country.
“…this decision will help the Anti-Corruption Commission create a proper environment to perform its duty independently and effectively. And, on the other side, it has increased the government’s responsibility to implement its pledges and political will aiming to fulfill its international commitment to preventing corruption,” he said.
On October 31, 2003, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). The Assembly also designated December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day, to raise awareness against corruption and the role of the Convention in combating and preventing it. The Convention took effect in December 2005.
