Three waste transfer stations work are yet to be completed even after the end of the scheduled time and an extension. Disposal of wastes is being badly hampered in the different wards of the city.
Besides, the authority failed to start constructing another (fourth) such station in the South Surma area in the city.
The Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) officials said main work was completed but some minor works were going on in full swing. It will be completed in a month. Tk 24 million schemes were earlier extended till June last year, informed acting chief engineer of SCC Nur Azizur Rahman. Again it had to be extended till June 2017.
We express the hope that the project would be completed in a month as some finishing works are being done the official added. However, the works on the other station couldnt even be started as yet due to delay in land selection and complexity over the starting works.
The acting Chief Engineer said the complexity has been resolved. The site is also selected at the South Surma area. Hopefully it would be started in months at a cost of 8 million taka, he added.
On completion the secondary waste transfer stations would ensure safe dumping of house hold wastes, collected from the different residential areas of the citys 27 wards, he added. Then we would go for waste management project with recycling facilities, the official said.
However, the main and central Sanitary Landfill construction would cost about Tk 300 million, he said, adding, design, soil test and survey on the project had also been completed months ago.
With a view to ensuring better waste management system, the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) will establish a Sanitary Landfill at the city suburban Lalmatia area on the Sylhet-Fenchuganj road. The Tk 300 million project would be financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), official sources informed.
The Urban Public and Environmental Health Sector Development Project of the ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has been implementing these projects.
A team of senior officials of the project had visited the site months ago while visiting the ongoing construction works on the secondary waste transfer stations, being constructed at the citys Tilagar, Kazitola and Rikabibazar areas, for collecting wastes the concerned areas houses.
