A Chittagong court on Monday awarded death sentence to three persons for raping a health worker in Banshkhali upazila of the district in 2005.
The judge Mohammad Rezaul Karim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal- 1 delivered the judgment convicting Mohammad Shafi Alam, Mohammad Kalu and Mohammad Abul Hossain.
The court also fined TK one lakh each of the convicts, court sources said.
The prosecution story is, in brief, that the convicts raped the victim, a health worker of a Brac-run health centre, while she was going to a religious function of the Hindu community at South Jaldi area of the upazila on June 12 in 2005.
Later, on June 14, the victim filed a case with Banshkhali thana in this connection.
Police submitted charge-sheet on August 21, 2005, while the court framed charges on June 5, 2013.
The court today awarded the judgment after examining six out of 11 prosecution witnesses.
Among the convicts Shafi Alam was produced before the court while the two other convicts have been absconding.
