Voters will exercise their franchise in Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet city corporations’ 395 centres on July 30 from 8 am to 4 pm.
The two main political parties have taken the polls ‘seriously’ as it is taking place before six months of the next general elections.
Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used in some centers.
A good number of police, RAB, Ansar and VDP members will be deployed to maintain law and order during the polls. The Election Commission officials will be working at the polling centres in order to make the election free and fair.
In Rajshahi, reserved wards are 10 in number, general wards 30, voters 318,138 (male 156,085 and female 162,053), vote centres 138 and booths 1026.
Six candidates are vying for mayor posts while 167 are contesting general ward councilors and 52 for the reserved councillors’ posts.
Awami League’s AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, BNP’s Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, Jatiya Party’s Wasiur Rahman Dolon, Bangladesh Jatiya Party’s Habibur Rahman, Islami Shashontantra Andolan’s Shafiqul Islam and Independent runner Murad Morshed are contesting mayor posts in Rajshahi.
Syed Amirul Islam will be the returning officer in the election. Rajshahi City Corporation began its journey on August 1, 1987.
In Barishal City, the number of reserved wards is 10, general wards 30, voters 242,166 (male 121,436, female 120,730), vote centres 123 and booths 750.
Seven aspirants are in the mayor race, while 111 candidates are contesting the general ward councilors posts and 38 reserved councillor posts.
Awami League Sadiq Abdullah, BNP’s Advocate Mujibur Rahman Sarwar, Communist Party Advocate AK Azad, Basd Dr. Manisha Chakraborty, Islamic Movement of Bangladesh Maulana Obaidur Rahman Mahbub, AKM Mahbub Alam of Khelafat Majlis and Jatiya Party (Ershad) Iqbal Hossain Taposh are the mayor candidates in Barishal City Corporation polls.
Md. Mojibur Rahman has been appointed returning officer for Barisal polls.
Barisal City Corporation began its journey on July 25, 2002.
Sylhet City has nine reserved wards, 27 general wards, 321,732 voters (males 171,444 females 150,288), 134 polling centres and 926 booths.
Six candidates are running for the mayor’s office, while 127 aspirants are vying for the general ward councillor posts and 56 for the reserved councillor post.
Awami League’s Badar Uddin Kamran, BNP’s Ariful Haque Chowdhury, rebel candidate Badruzzaman Selim, Jamaat-e-Islam’s City’s Ameer Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, Central committee member of the Islamic Movement Dr. Moazzem Hossain and CPB-BSD nominated candidate Abu Zafar are contesting in Sylhet city polls. Sylhet’s Regional Election Officer Md. Alimuzzaman is the returning officer for the polls.
