Thousands throng at JU Butterfly Fair

Thousands of nature enthusiasts thronged the day-long Butterfly Fair on the Jahangirnagar University campus on Friday amid festivity and fanfare.
With the slogan “”Urle Akashe Projapoti, Prokriti Pay Notun Goti” (if butterfly flies, the nature get new momentum), JU Zoology Dsepartment organized the fair for the five time in association with a private company Cute, Prakriti O Jiban Foundation, IUCN and a partnership with private television Channel I.
JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam inaugurated the fair releasing balloons and butterfly at around 10:00 am at the premises of Zahir Raihan auditorium at the campus while Professor Monwar Hossain of Zoology Department also the Convener of the Fair and Mukit Mozumder Babu, Chairman of Prokiti o Jibon Fundation were present .
A pictorial book titled “Butterflies of Bangladesh-Inventory Third Phase” written by Professor of JU Zoology Department Monwar Hossain and CU Prof Shafique Haider Chowdhury was
unveiled and basement of a butterfly park and research center were also inaugurated on the occasion.
From the early morning, students from different institutions, teachers, children with their family, photographers and butterfly lovers started to arrive on the campus from different parts of Dhaka city to enjoy the fair.
Around 1000 butterfly of 125 species of living butterflies were displayed including Plain Tiger, Common Crow, Plum Judy, Dingy Bush brown, Common Duffer, Ape Fly, Pea Blue, Tiny Grass Blue, Oak Blue, Common Sailor, Common Rose, Blue Mormon, Striped Albatross, Mottled Emigrant, Common Grass Yellow, Monkey Puzzle, Blue Pansy and Painted Lady in the fair.
The day-long Fair included children’s art competition on nature and butterfly, photography competition on butterfly, displaying living butterfly, kite flying, butterfly identification competition prize distribution of the competitions, cultural events and documentary shows on butterfly.
Prof. Farzana Islam, Vice-Chancellor of JU said , Butterflies are not only beautiful but also give a pleasant feeling to our mind.
Khurshida Khanam and Sumi whose are both private university student, came to the fair expressed their feelings as “we are very excited to join the fair.”
Lifetime honours was awarded to Prof Soharab Ali of Rajshahi University for his significant contribution to the field of research on butterfly.
