Ahsanul Amin George, Khulna :
Thousands of people of two upazilas (Terokhada and Rupsha) in Khulna district are suffering for want of a concrete bridge on the linking point of Sheikhpura and Shiali bazaars over the river Atharobeki for more than a week as the Water Development Board (WDB) authorities detached the embankment.
Local people said, there are two large markets called Sheikhpurabazar and Shialibazar on both sides of the embankment. These two markets are in Terokhada and Rupsha upazila areas of Khulna district. The inhabitants of both the upazilas come and go over the embankment from one place to another. Even they use the dam for going to the Divisiuonal city Khulna and different upazilas and districts including Bagerhat and Gopalgonj.
Besides, there is a high school, adjacent to Shialibazar in Terokhada upazila where more than two hundreds students of Ajogara and Barashat unions of the upazila have been studying. But after detaching the dam, the students are becoming worst sufferers, sometimes, many students fall in the river along with their books.
Some persons arranged to cross the persons a boat and a floating artificial Engineless ferry with which people are crossing the river in exchange of money. People fall in a critical condition while taking patients. Rickshaws, Rickshaw-vans, motorbikes, three-wheelers and pickups crossing were already stopped.
“A large number of farmers carrying agricultural produce face troubles severely while crossing the river”, said Mohidul Islam of Ajogara in Terokhada.
“We require a concrete bridge on urgent basis as we have to go to the markets for purchasing and selling necessary commodities”, said Iqbal Molla of Tilok area in Rupsha. By mentioning the necessity of building a concrete bridge, the victimized people informed the matter to the Member of Parliament (MP) Abdus Salam Murshedy.
Abdus Salam Murshedy, current MP of Khulna-4 constituency said, after coming to learn the problem, instructions were given to two Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) for solving the problem.
