Thousands of admission seekers, who went to take part in the Chittagong University admission test and their guardians, have got stuck in the port city following the countrywide transport strike.
Traffic movement between Chittagong-Dhaka and other parts of the country came to a halt due to the strike since Sunday causing immense sufferings to thousands of students and guardians who got stranded.
Some students and their guardians managed to stay in their relatives’ homes,
but most of them are helpless and compelled to hire residential hotels.
Riad Uddin, an admission seeker, told The New Nation that he sat for admission test under “D Unit” of the Chittagong University on Monday. But he could not get any vehicles after the admission test to return to Dhaka.
“I along with my father have come here on Saturday to take part in the admission test. We hired a room in a city residential hotel to stay a day. My test has been finished, but I was compelled to stay more time here,” he said.
Noman Chowdhury, a banker, said, “I have come to Chattogram as my daughter’s admission test for “B Unit” was on Sunday. My office granted me two days leave. But I cannot move due to the transport strike.”
“We are staying in a house where my relatives live in the Chittagong University area. But it is urgent to leave Chattogram. But we have to leave tomorrow (Monday) for Dinajpur,” he said.
Meanwhile, the taxi, CNG-run auto rickshaw and rickshaw have allegedly been charging extra fare from the admission seekers on the way to the university campus.
The Chattogram police also arrested many transport workers for realising extra fare from the admission seekers at Zero point on the university campus, just before beginning the admission test on Saturday.
Officer-in-Charge Belal Uddin Jahangir of Hathazari Police Station said they have arrested six persons after getting allegation of realising additional fare from the admission seekers and their guardians.
The admission test for Chittagong University (CU) for the academic session 2018-2019 began on Saturday, with 28 candidates vying for each seat.
The admission test will continue till October 31, where 1,36,247 aspirants from across the country have applied for admission against 4,926 seats under four units, said Deputy Registrar SM Akbar Hossain.
