Thousands of people in three coastal districts- Bhola, Patuakhali and Barguna, were also facing suffering on Wednesday due to flood following damage of embankments and flood control dykes in monsoon rains and high tides.
In Patuakhali, a number of villages of different upazilas, particularly Kalapara Upazila, have been flooded following the erosion of a flood control dykes under the impact of tidal surge. Thousands of acres of agricultural land in 13 villages in Kalapara Upazila have gone under saline water.
Meanwhile, eight Paltun and Gangways of the Ferry Ghat of Barisal-Patuakhali road snaked due to tidal water. The ferry was stooped for about two hours. For this reason, the passengers of the road faced extreme suffering.
Ferry section supervisor of Patuakhali Road and Highway Department Fazlul Haque said that Paltun and Gangways snaked, as the water level has increased by three to four feet from regular flow. However, the situation returned to normal after the end of the tide.
Following the flood, the diarrhea patients were increased in the district. At least 33 diarrhea patients were admitted only to the Kalapara Health Complex in the last five days, said Dr Aminul Islam, medical officer of the health complex.
Kalapara Upazila health officer Lelina JH Khan said that they have provided treatment at least two hundred patients in the last couple of days.
In Bhola, at least nine villages at Doulatkah upazila have been flooded following the collapse of the flood control dyke. Over five thousands people in the villages marooned. Some educational intuitions of the upazila are now under the flood water, local sources said.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer of the Doulatkhan upazila said that the authorities of the Water Development
Board (WDB) have been asked to repair the dyke on emergency basis.
Several villages of Charfashion nad Monpura upazilas have also been submerged. Water from the Meghna River entered the villages through the open flood control dyke in South Sakuchia and Monpura unions, eyewitnesses told the media.
The locals alleged the WDB did not give due attention for timely repair of damaged embankments and dykes in different points of the island district.
Abdul Hekim, Executive Engineer of the Bhola WDB talking to the media said with the advent of the monsoon it has become difficult to conduct repair work of the dykes in the upazilas. The repair work of the dykes, he said, would start following recession of flood water.
In Barguna, water level has increased by two to three feet from regular ebb tide in different areas of the district, locals said. At least 50 villages including Barguna municipal area have been badly hit by floods. Out of 907 KM town embankment at least 280 suffered extensive damage earlier in Sidr and cyclone Mahasen. Those damaged areas were not properly repaired, said Barguna Municipal Mayor Shahadat Hossain.
