Commentary: Those who fled us are now look for defeated enemies among us

Nation observed the Victory Day on 16th December while living in deadly fear of coronavirus and the miseries of economic plunder.
The Victory Day reminds us the most harrowing nine months of torture and mass killing under the occupation of the Pakistan army. The leaders and others who left the country for India had no time to worry about us. They themselves saved their lives but the situation they faced in India was also far from honourable.
The Victory Day was for us also a great national mourning day when the country was reeling under the impact of genocidal activities of Pakistan army. The leaders fled the country for safety in India. Not only the leaders sought shelter but also a huge number of refugees came to India as paupers for help.
During the evolving crisis Awami League leadership appeared brave and confident. They remained cocooned with their yes men, thereby kept the whole nation in ignorance of what was happening. When the crisis came, the leaders could only think of their own safety and disappeared.
We find the day additionally a day of great joy for celebration because on that day we were freed from the barbarity amounting to genocide committed by Pakistan occupation army on our people continuously for nine months.
Anybody who has any knowledge of the events leading to our liberation war and not ready
to distort facts our people were left helpless to face the military operation and thousands of us who remained in the country were butchered finding us leaderless and no resistance. We have tolerated all this.
But we are not ready to listen to the sermons from those intellectuals who left the country and us for their own safety in their chosen safe shelter in India along with our leaders that they would look for defeated enemies among us. They defeated nobody and certainly not our people.
After coming back to Bangladesh feeling safe and protected some of them are showing the audacity to challenge the patriotism of our people who made maximum sacrifices to defend the country.
Their love of India is their business. But to forget the lives our people lost in thousands in defence of the country is to show ingratitude to the sacrifice of our people. It is for their sacrifice and India’s help for our people made it possible for the “brave” people like them to return. Do not try to be false heroes. India did not help the helpless ones who became a burden on India. They had no influence or capacity to organise resistance within the country. They were completely on the mercy of India.
It is the genocidal activities inflicted on our people by brutal Pakistan army that aroused international sympathy and support for the cause of our people for liberation from Pakistan.
It should not be unknown that Bhutto and some hawkish Pakistani Generals were looking for an opportunity to punish us and surgically cut out East Pakistan.
The surrender of Pakistan army to India was a uniquely friendly affair. Indian Generals were received by the Pakistan army Generals at the airport. A luncheon party was thrown in honour of Indian army officers. Our Freedom Fighters were excluded so that the surrender looked exclusively between India and Pakistan. The Pakistani war criminals could not be punished by us. They were in India’s custody for surrendering to Indian army. You people did not have the courage to protest.
So it seems clear that separation of East Pakistan was a joint venture both of India and Pakistan. Without any serious war Pakistan surrendered as if they were waiting for an opportunity to go out of East Pakistan. Our people were angry and bitter against Pakistan army. They found it unsafe to continue in East Pakistan.
But those who took flight from us were no help to our people. They were looking to and remained safe.
Our liberation was for democracy unlike India’s war to defeat Pakistan. This country is owned by the people and this truth shall prevail. We are leaderless now but the situation will not remain the same. Our liberation war has not come to an end as our struggle for democracy shall continue.
