Biman Bangladesh Airlines will get its third Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner today (Thursday), as the national flag carrier is on course to modernise its fleet with wide-body modern aircrafts.
The new aircraft named “Gangchil” will land at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 3.45pm, after making a nonstop 15-hour flight from Seattle, USA, said Biman Deputy General Manager (Public Relations) Tahera Khandaker.
A 24-member Bangladesh team is now in Seattle to receive the most modern aircraft from Boeing Company.
The plane, capable of flying 16 hours nonstop with an average speed of 650 miles per hour, is expected to start commercial operations next month.
Biman’s first 787-8 Dreamliner, “Akash Beena”, joined the fleet on August 19, 2018 and the second one, “Hangsabalaka”, arrived on December 1, 2018.
The fourth and final Biman Boeing 787, “Rajhangsha”, is supposed to join the fleet in September.
In 2008, Biman Bangladesh Airlines signed a $2.1 billion deal to purchase 10 aircraft from world-renowned manufacturer Boeing. Biman already received delivery of four 777-300ERs, two 737-800s, and two 787-8 Dreamliner.
Officials said, Biman has procured the wide-body aircraft as part of its international air route network expansion plan.
The national flag carrier had a plan to open and reopen eight international routes by 2021.
These are Dhaka-Guangzhou, Dhaka-Colombo, Dhaka-Male, Dhaka-Medinah, Dhaka-Delhi, Dhaka-Hong Kong, Dhaka-Rome, Dhaka-Manchester and Dhaka-New York.
Of the planned routes, Biman had already resumed Dhaka- Delhi direct flights on May 13.
The national flag carrier had been operating flights to Delhi since 1980s but suspended the service in 2015.
“Biman has already drawn up route network expansion plan worldwide to make its operation sustainable,” said Tahera Khandaker, adding, “It will open three international routes soon utilizing the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners.”
These are Dhaka-Guangzhou, Dhaka-Colombo and Dhaka Medinah.
Biman now serves seven domestic and 16 international destinations with 14 aircraft — four Boeing 777-300ERs, two 787-8s, five Boeing 737-800s, and three Bombardier Dash-8 Q400 planes. In the 90’s, Biman used to serve 26 international and seven domestic destinations.
