Readers' Forum: The ‘Tied’ test match

Critics say that the One-day cricket has given booties to the players, but the Test cricket has given bounty of pleasures. The cricket fans realised this truth of late and that is why they have turned their faces from the 2015 World Cup Cricket underway in Australia and New Zealand. The almost empty stadiums in 80 percent matches exposed that truth.
However, the only ‘Tied’ test match in the history of cricket was held in Brisbane on December 9 to 14 between the West Indies and hosts Australia. The score: West Indies 453, 284; Australia 505, 232.
Winning the toss, West Indies captain Frank Worrel, whom many critics consider as token of ideal cricket, decided to bat and his team piled up 453 in the first innings. Garfied Sobers, whom the experts have unanimously recognised as the world’s greatest all rounder so far produced, made 132 runs. Besides, Worrell contributed 65, Solomom 65 and Alexander 65.
For Australia, Alan Davidson took five wickets for 135 runs and L.F. Kline 3 for 52.
In reply, Australia piled up mammoth 505 runs and took 52 runs first innings lead. O’ Neil scored 181 and Boby Simpson 92. For West Indies, Wesley Hall captured four wickets giving away 140 runs and Sobers 2 for 52.
In the second innings, the visitors made 284 runs, depending on Worrell’s 65, Kanhai’s 54 and Solomon’s 47. For the hosts, Davidson harpooned 6 wickets for 87 runs.
Needing 233 runs to win, Australia were all out for 232 and the first Test of the series ended ‘Tied.’ Alan Davidson scored 80 runs and captain Benaud 52. Wesley Hall bagged five wickets giving away 63 runs only. In two innings, Davidson took 11 wickets for 222 runs and Hall nine wickets for 203 runs.
If the ICC realises it, it is better for cricket..
