Police recovered throat-slit bodies of four members of a family from a house at Jaina Bazar area of Telihati union under Sreepur upazila in Gazipur on Thursday.
The deceased are Fatema Begum Smrity, 40, her two daughters Sabrina Sultana Nura, 16, Haorin Howa, 11 and her mentally challenged son Fadil. Fatema was an Indonesian citizen and also wife of a Malaysian expatriate Bangladeshi national who hailed from Gafargaon upazila in Mymensingh.
According to newspaper reports, brother-in-law of the deceased Arif said that he went to Fatema’s house with some groceries. But he failed to get anybody to open the door for him after repeated attempts till afternoon around 4:30 pm. Later, he climbed up to get in through a window and found the throat slit bodies of the four. The victims were living in their own house.
It is suspected that the incident might have taken place after midnight. What’s surprising is that the neighbours did not hear any sound or scream of the victims. Police said they found nude bodies of the mother and two daughters and recovered a knife and hatchet beside them. Four of them were killed in the same room where multiple killers can be involved.
It is also nothing new that the neighbours do not want to come forward and be helpful to the police. We hope that the IGP Benazir Ahmed will try to find out the reasons why police have lost public faith.
Our view is that the police came close to the government to be used politically including denying the people free election. He will certainly understand how vital for the police to enjoy people’s trust as impartial law enforcers.
Another sad fact is politically involved criminals feel sure they will be able to evade law. The task of the new IGP to motivate his vast police force to be the people’s police is onerous. But they will have to save from party politics.
There is also a failure to take safety measures for the police kept in the streets in large numbers where government men are busy with mere personal gain and fulfilling their interest.
In all aspects we’re going to face chaotic situation. There will be widespread poverty and hunger. The government having lost public trust not being elected, it is not expected that the government will be able to hold its position of political influence over the people.
They will have to depend more on police. We do not see any move on the part of the government to give up the politics of hatred and disunity. Some kind of collective effort is a must to deal with the most dangerous coronavirus-the world ever saw.
The pandemic is not only taking lives but also causing a huge crisis for the country’s economy that already has been crippled. The lies are coming out. Sycophants in the government will go hiding.
The ministers are too anxious to come to the people or face the press bare faced. They meet the press with their virtual presence and not with their real presence. The prime ministers and presidents in the most affected countries like the USA and UK meet the press with their physical presence to explain the activities of their governments and answer questions from the press.
Our government appears to be locked in. They are busy in video conference and showing virtual presence. The other day the health minister held a virtual press conference only to deny the arrangement of a VIP hospital. This is how the government is standing by the people at this time of grave crisis.
It is time for all sensible people to rethink and do their best when the people dying helplessly in thousands.
