Recently, I was reading traditional epic poem “Aeneid” composed by Vergil where a goddess named Juno couldn’t cross other god’s area for practicing power, even every god has his own limitations. Goddess of love couldn’t hamper the area of goddess of wind. But that was classical age which is considered much uncivilized than modern one. Although there were limitations in gods or goddesses in classical dogmatic society but in modern society and democratic era some people have no bound for practicing his power illegally. They don’t care anyone even bosses where system exist and designed by state they belong to.
As we have been related to campus journalism so if anyone falls in serious trouble but couldn’t do everything even after getting considered foully. So as senior brother or friend or junior, victim easily might be touched us because they believe there have a free space to make everything clear. So generally we get huge responses of troubles from all kind of students even who are active in politics also.
So, some students incessantly knocked me regarding the decision in a student who is was not allowed to sit for his final examination in Film and Television department of Jagannath University. Some days before the department chairman with his allies submitted a written complain to authorities concerned alleging that the student with others have been breaking the discipline of the department. Even before submitting the complaints against them in written, the departmental authorities had restricted them not to sit for assessment examinations.
Getting written complaints university authorities asked accused to replay within defined time issued by authorities. Mahmudul Hasan Mishu and Mahmudul Hasan Sohan, both are second year students of the department (2016-17), they had replied against the allegations brought out against them but authorities had suspended Mahmudul Hasan Sohan in allegation of watching adultery video in the department and indecent behaviours to the department chairman, though he demanded he was watching a Hollywood movie as the movie is included in one of their courses and not behaved like. As allegations brought against Mahmudul Hasan Mishu had no legal ground so authorities didn’t take any kind of steps against him. But this decision couldn’t make the chairman happy. Where the university VC, Register and Proctor with others took the decision about Shuvo but that couldn’t change the academic life of Mishu. On 17 November, during the final examinations, 15 minutes after the exam start, the chairman along with other teachers pushed Mishu away the examinations hall, they however threatened him for beating up by Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling Awami League-backed student wing and to be arrested by police.
So, Shuvo couldn’t attend the exam. When journalists approached the University authorities, The VC replied he made decision to let Shuvo permit in examinations, as the chairman didn’t want him in exams hall so what can he do for him?! Rather He used to maintain many activities of the university, such trifling matter doesn’t go with him eventually.
But Junaid Halim -the chairman of Film and Television department much rigour than the VC he replied he couldn’t talk to general journalists but editor, if university office gave permission to Shuvo then he should attend there as the chairman not permitting him so he couldn’t join the department examinations. Even asked the journalists not to ask same questions to him further which exposures his egoistic “I Don’t Care “attitude.
On November 20, scheduled time for second examination cancelled as this incident went viral on social media and many users criticised about the chairman so he wouldn’t take the exam and finally cancelled it with all kind of academic activities, although fellows of Mishu protested the decision brought against him. Although Mishu doesn’t know what are the causes behind this personal biff of the chairman against him but he has no hope as the chairman even doesn’t acknowledge the university VC. Could you please reply what should Shuvo do? Is this how BCL is being used for one’s personal desires? Or who even permit BCL to beat or assault students on university campus?
This is not only the incident to Shuvo rather there are many incidents happening here, some days ago Milton Biswas former chairman of Bangla department of the university unfairly marked exam papers of some students who brought out allegations of sexual harassment against him. In allegation of writing a poem which seemed to authorities indecent so the same department suspended a student a few years ago who was from 2015-16 session now has been starting academic life with 2018-19 session, he already lost three years from life. Even the university authorities issued a notice not to allow anyone including its former students in the campus without any kind of official activities during class time and no students could stay the campus after 11:00 pm. After such illogical decisions taken by authorities who might term it as universal place of free thinking? Or from where before submitting written complaints ones can restrict students not to join examinations? Who actually could ensure the academic life of these students, is their future all about games of twilight to some powerful teachers. From whom Shuvo and other students ought to take permission to convince the chairman and authorities where there is a monarchy of chairman’s “Don’t Care” and VC’s “Can’t do anything”.
