VERTICAL GARDENING: The generation next urban gardening

Bangladesh is a densely populated country. The number of people is increasing day by day. Almost 165 million people live in this small country. The ratio of the population and the land area is imbalanced. For this reason deforestation and other problems occur. Deforestation is one of the biggest problems in our country. To meet up the demands of agricultural and residential land, people are cutting down trees which is causing deforestation. A country should have forest about 25 per cent of the total land area. But Bangladesh has forest less than 25 per cent of its total area. The deforestation process is rapidly increasing because of the development of urban areas and need of more agricultural lands. As deforestation is increasing the climate is getting more hostile.
The ecological balance is not at a neutral state because of deforestation. If the numbers of trees are increased then we will need more land but how come we will be able to meet up the land demand for urbanization and agriculture. Have we ever thought the why we think of planting trees horizontally, why not vertically.
There is a process of growing plants vertically. It is a type of urban gardening which is done on the walls or the vertically extended structures. We are familiar with the rooftop gardening, which is also a type of gardening. Vertical gardening is done on urban structures which are extended vertically like, walls, pillars, etc.
It is beneficial in many ways. Firstly, if the building is covered with green surface, it will absorb less heat. Absorption of less heat means we will need less air conditioning. Less air conditioning means less power consumption. Then the plants emit oxygen which is good for the environment.
Secondly, the building is getting a greenish look or a natural look. It will increase the aesthetic value. If the plants have flower then it will create a color contrast.
Thirdly, it will increase the number of plants and the planting areas. Like if a building is build on a square land which has sides of 100meters. Then the total area will be 10,000 square meters. But if the building is 100 meters tall then it will have 40,000 square meters of area to plant (4sides x height of building x side of the land). If we leave some space for windows and others it will be more than the total area.
In Bangladesh, vertical gardening is done in micro levels. Some people took steps to make vertical garden in their house or office or restaurants.
A large scale vertical gardening has been done in the factory of KARUPANNYA in Rangpur. Vertical gardening is famous all around the world, especially in Europe. Africa is thinking about their own version of vertical gardening. USA based many companies are also promoting vertical gardening. Europe is trying to solve the land problems of agriculture through vertical gardening. India has done vertical gardening in Pune. They used the pillars of the metro rail .Recently Mexico took a step for vertical gardening; they made a part of highway almost zero carbon area by the help of vertical gardening. What they did is they used the pillars of the flyover to do vertical gardening. This resulted a zero carbon area. If a developing country like Mexico can do such projects. Then why Bangladesh should be behind. In Bangladesh, this types of projects are needed because the forestation will increase the power consumption will decrease. It will result a huge change in vegetation of the urban areas.
The biggest thing what will change is the air quality. Plants emit oxygen and water vapor, which helps to clean the air. The urban areas will get more human friendly. It is also a forestation process. So, the forestation is also increasing through this vertical gardening. If the government and the NGOs come forward to do such projects and promote them. If more research is done on this topic then there will be good result as our country has a plant friendly climate. In short vertical gardening is a solution to some problems like the air purification, deforestation etc. It’s the next generation gardening process. n
