UNB, Chattogram :
Thai Princess and Executive Chairperson of the Chaipattana Foundation Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on Wednesday planted saplings of binna (vetiver) grass on the city’s Batali Hill.
She also inaugurated the Vetiver Grass Development Centre at the nearby Tiger Hill area of the city.
Minister of Environment and Forest Anisul Islam Mahmud and Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) A J M Nasir Uddin were also present during the inauguration.
“As excessive rain is a main cause for hill erosion in the country, the planting of binna grass would resist erosion to a great extent,” Anisul said.
The initiative is a new environmental conservation project taken in collaboration with the Environment and Forests Ministry of Bangladesh titled “Bangladesh-Thailand Vetiver Grass Development Project to prevent hill erosion in Chattogram”.
The pilot project will be supervised by the CCC and the Chaipattana Foundation.
After the inauguration, the Thai princess went on to visit various historical sites in the city.
