BNP on Friday threw a challenge to Awami League to test its popularity by holding the next general election without any influence of the administration and law enforcers.
“They (AL) know it very well what BNP can do and what it can’t. We ask them to test which party is more popular in the country by holding the election without any influence of the government and police,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after placing wreaths at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave along with the leaders of the party’s newly formed committees of Dhaka north and south units.
The BNP leader said an election-time ‘supportive’ government together with a neutral Election Commission is a must to create a level-playing field for the election. “Otherwise, no fair and acceptable election will be possible to hold.”
Describing the current government as undemocratic and autocratic one, he said a level-playing-filed will not be created if the election is held under it.
“No election in the past was free and fair under Awami League. It won’t be allowed to hold a controlled election this time staying in power. BNP won’t participate in the next election if the level-playing field is not ensured,” Fakhrul added. Turning to the flood issue, he alleged that the government is obstructing BNP’s team from going to Sunamganj to distribute relief materials among the flood victims on the pretext of the Prime Minister’s tour.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will visit the Sunamganj flood-affected areas on Sunday to see for herself the flood situation there. Asked why BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia did not go to the haor areas to stand beside the flood-hit people, Fakhrul said she will go there if it is necessary. “BNP always remains beside people.”
The BNP leader said they formed the committees of Dhaka city BNP’s two units comprising the young and old leaders. “We hope the committee members will strengthen the movement for restoration of democracy and play a significant role in making it a success.”
On April 19 last, BNP split its Dhaka city unit into south and north ones making Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and Abdul Quayum their leaders respectively.
