Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman on Sunday said terrorist activities in the name of a political movement cannot be tolerated.
“The current situation of the country is terrible; the key responsibility of the state is to provide safety to its citizens, the state can’t disregard its duty,” said the NHRC chief.
Mizanur Rahman came up with the remarks at a discussion titled ‘Human Rights is on Threat: Our Responsibility’ arranged by the NHRC at the BRAC Centre Inn in the city.
Human rights workers and representatives from the European Union, France, the Netherlands and some international organizations attended the programme.
“The law enforcers can use their highest power to prevent the terrorists; but they should be aware of protecting the basic human rights,” said the NHRC boss.
He also expressed concern over ‘excesses’ in some cases by law enforcers while preventing terrorism.
Former caretaker government adviser Rasheda K Chowdhury, Law Commission member Shah Alam and former VC of Jahangirnagar University Prof Anwar Hossain were also present.
