Nilphamari Correspondent :
Tension mounted in the upazila town of Jaldhaka in the district as two rival groups of ruling Awami League (AL) staged separate show downs on occasion of celebrating Independence Day on 26 march, apparently to display supremacy as many precisionists in both groups carried sticks with national flag at the tops.
However, the administration managed to avert any untoward incident as strong contingent of police deployed in the town with frequent patrol by rapid action battalion.
Sources said, local unit of Awami League is divided into two opponent groups over the issue of favouring Jamaat-Sibirt which is a major political force in the upazila.
Expelled president of upazila unit of AL Ansar Ali Mintu and running General Secretary Shahid Hossain Rubel lead one of the factions and local lawmaker from Nilphamari-3 constituency Golam Mostofa leads the other.
President and general secretary backed party activists gathered at upazila party office premises and lawmaker’s supporters assembled at shaheed minar premises.
