Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) VP-elect Nurul Haq Nur on Tuesday evening demanded reelection to all the posts of Ducsu, including that of VP, citing irregularities during Monday’s polls.
He also demanded resignation of the incumbent officials involved in Ducsu election and holding of the reelection under the supervision of new officials.
Nur came up with the fresh demand after consultation with his panel members, independent candidates, general students and leaders of left student organisatoins.
Nur’s demand for reelection has sparked a fresh tension on the Dhaka University campus, which was apparently eased after the exchange of greetings with his Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) rival Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon.
Earlier in the afternoon, BCL, led by its president Shovon, greeted Nurul Haq Nur showing a positive gesture.
Nur announced to withdraw their class-boycott programme responding to the BCL leader’s call, Nurul withdrew the class boycotting programme and said he wants justice of the BCL men who attacked him during the election.
Besides, Shuvon also asked the BCL men, who were demonstrating in front of the VC residence demanding reelection to the DUCSU, to stop their agitation accepting the DUCSU polls result.
“We cancelled our class boycott progrmme. But we’ll continue our demand for reelection. We’ll work together accepting the verdict of students to protect their interests,” Nur told the reporters after the meeting.
Shovon said, “Win and loss is natural in election. Since Nur was elected as the representative of students, so we would work with him. I would request my fellows not to create any chaos.”
“Nur will our desires. That’s why all will have to play a responsible role in maintaining the academic atmosphere of our beloved university,” he added.
Earlier, Nur, the popular quota reformist leader, has said they will continue their class boycott programme until re-election to Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) is held.
Nur and leaders of different student organisations held a meeting at the auditorium of TSC around 2:30 pm after Nur was assaulted allegedly by some activists of BCL on the campus. The long overdue elections to Ducsu and its hall unions were held on Monday.
Quota reform movement leader Nurul Haq Nur was elected vice-president (VP) of the Ducsu while BCL general secretary GolamRabbani its general secretary. Eight among nine secretary posts went to candidates from BCL panel.
Nur bagged 11062 votes, while his nearest rival BCL central president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon bagged 9129 votes.
Nur is a student of English department of the university. He is also Joint Convener of Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakshan Parishad, which led the protests for reforms in the quota system in government jobs in 2018.
Golam Rabbani got 10484 votes, while Rashed Khan secured 6063 votes. Chhatra League backed Saddam Hossain was elected as Assistant General Secretary Post securing highest 15301 votes.
Dhaka University vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman announced the results from Nawab Nabab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban around 3:20am on Tuesday amid protests by the supporters of Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Eight among nine secretary posts went to candidates from BCL panel, while one from independent candidate.
The winners from the BCL panel are freedom fighters affairs secretary Saad bin Kader, science and technology secretary Arif Ibn Ali, common room and cafeteria secretary BM Lipi Akter, international affairs secretary Shahrima Tanjima Arni, literature secretary Mazharul Kabir Shawon, cultural secretary Asif Talukder, sports secretary Shakil Ahmed Tanvir and students transport secretary Shams e Noman.
Akhter Hossain from quota reform movement panel won the post of social services.
The 13 elected members are Yashio Sangma Chibol, Nazrul Islam, Rakibul Hasan, Rakibul Islam Oitijjo, Tanvir Hasan Saikot, Raisa Naser, Sabrina Eti, Nipu Islam Tanni, Saiful islam Rasel, Tilottama Sikder, Farida Parvin, Mahmudul Hasan and Md Rafiqul Islam Sabuj.
In Shamsunnahar Hall Independent candidates won at 8 posts including Vice-President Tasnim Afroz and General Secretary Afsana Safa. Chhatra League won at 5 post.
In Salimullah Muslim Hall Chhatra League backed full panel won the hall union poll inlculding ,Vice-President Mujahid Kamal Uddinand General Secretary Julias Cizar.
In Jagannath hall Chhatra League backed full panel won the hall union poll inlculding , Vice-President Utpal Biswasand General Secretary Kajal Das.
Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall Independent candidate Riki haidar Asha won the Vice-President post, while Chhatra League backed Sara Binte Jamal elected as GS while they also won the Cultural Affairs Secretary and Cultural Affairs Secretary. Independent candidate won all other post.
Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall Chhatra League backed full panel won the hall union poll including, Vice-President Shariful Islam Shakil and General Secretary Hasibul Hossain Shanto.
Amar Ekushey Hall independent candidate Mehedi Hasan Sumon elected as vice-President while Chhatra League backed Ahsan Habib won the General Secretary post. Chhatra League won all other posts at the hall union poll.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall Chhatra League backed full panel won the hall union poll inlculding , Vice-President Akmal Hossain and General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Shanto.
Haji Mohammad Mohsin HallChhatra League backed full panel swept the poll including Vice-President Shahidul Huq Shishir, General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Mizan.
Kabi Jasimuddin HallChhatra League backed full panel swept the poll including Vice-President Forhad Ali and General Secretary Imam Hasan.
Sir AF Rahman HallChhatra League backed full panel swept the poll including Vice-President Alim Khan and General Secretary Abdur Rahim.
Bijoy Ekattor HallChhatra League backed full panel swept the poll including Vice-President Sajibur Rahman and General SecretaryNajmul Hasan.
Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Hall Chhatra League backed full panel swept the poll including Vice-President Hossain Ahmad Sohan and General Secretary Irfanul High Sourov.
Zahurul Haq Hall Chhatra League backed Saifullah Abbasi Anonto elected as Vice-President, while independent candidate Toufiqul Islam elected as General Secretary post.
Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall independent candidate Mahmudul Hasan Tomal as Vice-President while Chhatra League backed Mahfuzur Rahman elected as General Secretary post.
After the results were published all panels, except that of BCL, rejected the polls results alleging irregularities and demanded reelection to all the posts except the VP and Social Welfare post, and announced to boycott classes for an indefinite period.
The major panels, which pulled out of election to DUCSU, were also demonstrated for removal of the university’s vice-chancellor.
The panels of leftists, independents, quota reformists and others staged protests at TSC in rejection of the election and demanding a re-election to DUCSU on Tuesday.
In the morning, BCL supporters also staged protest in front of VC’s residence demanding re-election in VP post.
They began the protest after quota reform leader Nurul Haque Nur was elected vice president.
The BCL men also burned tyres in front of VC’s residence and chanted slogans that the election was a ‘farce’.
“We cannot accept a Shibir man Nur as the VP of a prestigious institution like Dhaka University,” Alimul Huq, ex-central library secretary of Chhatra League.
“The election process is unacceptable, whatever the outcome may be,” said Liton Nandi, the VP candidate and panel leader of Progressive Students Unity.
“If a Dhaka Unviersity student’s right to vote is snatched away, it can never be termed a fair election. If it was a fair election, we would have seen far different results,” he said.
Meanwhile, five Dhaka University students on Tuesday evening begun fast-unto-death demanding re-election to Dhaka University Central Students Union.
The students are Anindya Mandal of philosophy department, Tawhid Tanzim of computer science and engineering department, Moin Uddin of population science department, Shoyeb Mahmud of physics department and Rony Hasan of geography department.
Talking to journalists, Shoyeb said that controversial DUCSU polls had tarnished the image of the university.
They would continue fast until the university authorities cancelled the polls.
